Mrs. White and I had a spontaneous stay at Aloft Seoul two days ago. After visiting my parent in the late afternoon, we decided to go for an evening walk on the castle wall trail. As we got there, it was too hot and moist so our unplanned, last-minute hotel searching began in the middle of the city.
The castle wall trail was right in front of JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square but the overpriced hotel room was not worth it. Hence, we decided to find the next alternative near Myeongdong, a popular tourist area with malls and restaurants all around.
We then found four hotels around Myeongdong and its vicinity but ended up to stay whatever hotel we passed by and there was Aloft Seoul Myeongdong standing up along our path.
About Aloft Seoul Myeongdong:
Aloft Seoul Myeongdong rises above one of the best possible areas in central Seoul. It is 10 minutes to four different train stations from north to south and east to west. The hotel is also nearby two large luxury malls and large numbers of great restaurants.
Aloft Seoul Myeongdong is one of 25 Marriott properties in Seoul and the second Aloft hotel in Korea after Aloft Seoul Gangnam. This 21-story building first opened in early 2017 offering 223 standard rooms up to Presidential Suite. The rooms ranges from 22sqm ~ 140sqm or 237sqft ~ 1506sqft.
I have to mention that Aloft brands along with select Marriott properties such as Element, Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott Grand Residence Club and Vistana, do not offer room upgrades for elite members.
Checking-In at Aloft Seoul Myeongdong:
We booked the hotel a couple of minutes before arriving at the lobby but the staff quickly recognized our booking and got the reservation details ready in a blink of an eye. It was a late evening so there were no guests checking in and our room key was prepared right away.
Aloft Myeongdong used to have a check-in counter on the second floor by the W XYZ Bar and the first-floor reception was mainly used for the concierge. But now both of the counters are side by side on the ground floor.
We weren’t offered an upgrade but there are floors dedicated exclusively to Marriott Bovoy Loyalty members which were located on a higher floor. Additionally, Bonvoy Elites are eligible to receive either complimentary breakfast or 500 points as a welcome gift which I went for the latter.
Aloft Seoul Myeongdong Guest King Room:
We were assigned to room 1406 on the Marriott Loyalty Member Floor. Our room was the basic Aloft-styled room with ambient lighting and modern, wooden-themed interiors. Generally speaking, except for the artful color tones at Aloft brands in Seoul, the rooms have a similar feeling to Four Points properties in Seoul.
As we enter the room, a sliding glass door closed along the hallway, continue with a small fridge, safe, an electric kettle, and an ice bucket that you can fill up at the ice machine on each floor
With a table and a bench couch positioned by the floor-to-ceiling window, even though the room is a typical standard-sized room, it saved some space to make the room look more spacious.
Aloft Seoul Myeongdong Nook Restaurant:
Breakfast is served at Nook Restaurant on the B1 floor from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM. The restaurant is quite small in size so there is a limited number of seats during peak hours. It offers American and Asian breakfast buffet dining options.
We did not go for the complimentary breakfast option because we planned to get up late the next day. But as my experience in my past stay, the breakfast was decent and if you are staying long here, I would go for breakfast every morning.
Aside from breakfast, lunch is served from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM only on weekdays. But there are a lot of great restaurants around the hotel so I don’t see the benefit of having lunch here.
Aloft Seoul Myeongdong W XYZ Bar and Lounge:
There is two bar at Aloft Seoul Myeongdong. One is W XYZ Bar and Lounge and the other is the rooftop bar. While the rooftop bar opens during the summer season only, the W XYZ Bar and Lounge is open daily from 2:00 PM to 10:PM on weekdays and 11:00 Am to 10:00 PM on weekends.
W XYZ Bar is best for casual drinking with live entertainment from local artists and DJs to end your day wither from working or traveling in Seoul. It offers a full food menu and drinks served to your table.
Our last-minute impulse stays at Aloft Seoul Myeongdong were worth it except booking the room seconds before arriving costs more than usual. We didn’t feel much difference in terms of room and design from Aloft Seoul Gangnam where we stayed frequently except there are more things to explore in the Myeongdong area.
There will be a third Aloft property in Seoul coming this November. And I am excited to review out as this will be the first dual-brand Marriott hotel in the country together with the reopening of Le Méridien Seoul.
