Finnair Goes Cost Cutting; Axes Pillows And Champagnes

Finnair Goes Cost Cutting; Axes Pillows And Champagnes

Finnair has been hit very hard in terms of profitability and the airline announced today that there will be additional onboard service changes starting next month.

Let us go over what changes will be made soon.

Finnair Cuts Select Onboard Services

Finnair has announced in its Blue Wings magazine that there will be updates to its in-flight services on all flights starting April 19, 2023.

First of all, there will be changes to changes to the complimentary food and beverage service in business class on European flights. Furthermore, services on all travel classes on long-haul flights will have changes too.

Eerika Enne, Head of In-flight Customer Experience at Finnair said:

“Changes in our in-flight services are part of the many actions we are taking to restore Finnair’s profitability.”

Changes On Finnair Onboard Dining

Finnair has decided to make changes on long-haul flights with the main service in all travel classes with a full meal, while the second service will be lighter – either a light meal or a snack depending on the route and the flight time.

On the shortest long-haul flights and flights to/from New York and Dubai, there will be no second meal service in Economy Class, instead, snacks and drinks are available for purchase from the onboard menu.

On European flights, business class meal service will still depend on the route and complimentary water and blueberry juice will be served in economy class in addition to the snack on purchase.

Service Changes On Long-haul Finnair Flights

There will be one major change in economy class service on long-haul flights. Finnair will be cutting out pillows on all flights as the airline explains that many customers already travel with their own travel pillow, and on long-haul flights, the neck rest supports your head.

Also regarding the service cuts on New York and Dubai routes, the airline explains that passengers can also bring their own snacks with them. Granola bars, crackers, or cookies are handy because they don’t take up much space or need cold storage and can be carried through security.

Service Changes On Short-haul Finnair Flights

Not only there will be changes in long-haul services but in short-haul services too. The biggest change out of all will be the discontinuation of champagne in business class. Finnair will no longer serve champagne on intra-European flights instead it will replace it with sparkling wine.

Summary

Finnair made an announcement that the airline will be onboard service changes starting April 19, 2023. The airline will be reducing meal services on select routes as well as pillows in economy class cabins will be no longer offered.

The greatest change will be champagne being axed on intra-European routes and it will be replaced by sparkling wine. This will definitely see as a great disadvantage for passengers to fly Finnair.

Finnair is currently struggling since the start of the pandemic and the Russo-Ukraine war is making the airline to further cut some of its onboard services. But I think this cost-cutting strategy will leave many passengers to fly other airlines instead.
