Back in October 2019, United Airlines’ frequent flyer program: MileagePlus announced that there will be big changes to elite status starting in 2020. But this has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic that halted the travel industry.
And today, United Airlines MileagePlus has sent out emails to members for the upcoming changes to the program starting in 2023.
United Airlines MileagePlus Status Qualification Requirements In 2023
Starting in 2023, there will be an increase in Premier status qualification requirements. MileagePlus elite tier is qualified based on a combination of Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and Premier qualifying points (PQP) or a certain number of PQP.
And based on the activity between January 1 and December 31, 2023, the Premier status level will be awarded through January 31, 2025.
Compared to last year, there is a 50% increase in Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and almost 4,500 additional PQP increased to earn for Premier 1K members. Given that members earn 1 PQP per dollar spent, the top-tier members would need to spend US$24,000 in order to earn or retain their status.
United Airlines MileagePlus Program Jumpstart For Elites
United’s MileagePlus program stated on the website:
“For the past two years, we adjusted our MileagePlus Premier program requirements to reflect the frequency of travel during uncertain times. With travel now in full swing, our standard requirements are returning. But we are giving you a boost and adding new qualifying activities to our 2023 MileagePlus Premier program.”
This means existing MileagePlus elite members (Silver and above), will receive elite status jumpstart in 2023. In early 2023, we will automatically deposit PQP into MileagePlus accounts based on the 2023 Premier status you reached at the end of 2022.
Except for those that hold Trial status, eligible members will enjoy this head start toward status in 2024 as well.
Award Redemptions Now Quality For Status Qualifications
One of the biggest changes with the upcoming MileagePlus program will be the ability to earn Premier qualifying points (PQP).
Starting in 2023, eligible award flights will earn 1 PQP per 100 miles redeemed, as well as 1 PQF earned per United or United Express flight. Furthermore, the PQF and PQP earned will count towards elite qualifying status.
Earn Premier Qualifying Status With Credit Cards
From 2023, the maximum PQP able to be earned for card spending will double on select cards.
- United Quest card will be increased from 3,000 to 6,000 PQP.
- United Club Infinite card will be increased from 4,000 to 8,000 PQP.
- Eligible Unite MileagePlus Chase Cardmembers will continue to earn 500 PQP per $12,000 spent.
- The maximum number of PQP to be earned on eligible card spending will increase from 5,000 PQP to 15,000 PQP.
